These little cod bites recipe is from my mum. She used to make them when we were little and didn’t want to eat our fish. So they are perfect for children, who are usually fussy with eating fish, or for adult picky eaters. They are very fluffy on the inside and the fish taste is not strong at all. You can have them as a side dish or main with some veggies, wedges and why not, some sauce to dip them in.

This cod fillet bites recipe, on top of the cod, has only a few simple ingredients that you already have in your kitchen flour, egg, water, oil.
01. I usually buy a skinless cod fillet for this recipe but you could also try it with haddock or pollock if you prefer. Make sure the fillets are skinless or remove the skin yourself as it will not taste nice in the bites if it’s left on. I cut the fillet into half finger-sized pieces cause it’s easier to cook and for shaping the cod bites.
02. For the batter, I just combine the rest of the ingredients: the flour, egg, water. I usually don’t add any salt in my batter as the cod has a salty taste already and because I’m also sharing this with my little girl (children’s daily salt intake is quite low). As for the flour, you could use self-raising flour like in the recipe or plain with a teaspoon of baking powder.
03. Then I add the cod bites in the batter, stir it a little bit to combine everything, and now it’s time to cook them. I’m shallow frying the cod bites, so I half fill a nonstick frying pan with oil and heat it up over medium to high heat. Make sure the oil is well heated in the frying pan before scooping the batter in. You could test it by dropping a little bit of batter, if it sizzles, then it’s ready. With a tablespoon, I get a heaped spoon of the batter and put it in a pan. I add around 8-10 cod bites at a time to the frying pan.
04. I leave the cod bites to cook for 3-4 minutes before I flip them over and leave them for 3-4 more minutes to cook on the other side too until they have a nice golden brown color.

05. Using a slotted spoon, I remove the cod fillet bites from the pan and place them on a paper towel-lined plate, so most of the oil gets absorbed. I repeat this process until all batter is used. Leave them to drain for a couple of minutes before serving.
You can have the cod fillet bites as a side dish, appetizer or even as a main with some veggies and wedges on the side. Remember if you are going to share them with your little one, you should avoid adding any salt in the batter as the cod fish is already salty.
I recommend having the cod fillet bites hot and fresh, as they will be crispy outside. If you have any leftovers, you could store them in an airtight container in the fridge for the next day, but they will get soft outside and will not be the same as freshly made.
What fish can I use instead of cod for fish bites? For the fish bites, you could use cod, haddock or pollock fish.
Can I use plain flour instead of self-raising flour? Instead of one cup of self-raising flour, you could substitute it with one cup of plain flour with a teaspoon of baking powder.
Can I serve my baby cod fillet bites? Yes cod fillet bites are suitable for babies from 6 months if you don’t add any salt to the batter.

- 1 cod fillet (around 150gr)
- 1 cup self-raising flour
- 1 egg
- ½ cup water
- salt (optional *)
- oil for frying
- nonstick frying pan (paid link)
- Slotted spoon
- Cut the fish into half finger-sized pieces.
- In a large bowl, make the batter by mixing the flour, egg, water and salt (optional).
- Add the fish in the batter and mix until all is well combined.
- Half fill a frying pan with vegetable oil and heat over medium to high heat.
- Use a tablespoon to scoop and drop the batter into the oil.
- Leave the first batch for 3-4 minutes until golden and then flip to cook on the other side.
- Leave for 3-4 minutes and then remove using a slotted spoon. Drain over a paper towel-lined plate.
- Repeat until all batter is used.
* If you are making these for little ones be mindful of the salt. Cod can be quite salty sometimes so perhaps you want to avoid adding any in the batter.
You could store the cod fillet bites in an airtight container and have them later on that day or the next day. They will not be as crispy as when they are fresh but they will still taste good.
